One of South Australia’s leading businessmen,
Alan Hickinbotham, can claim achievements in several arenas. Growing
up in rural South Australia, where his father established the
now famous wine and viticulture courses at Roseworthy Agricultural
College, Alan first excelled at sport. He was a talented schoolboy
cricketer and footballer, and went on to play football for South
Adelaide and Geelong, After service in the RAAF and a period as
a science teacher, he moved into real estate, and in the 1950s
established the family business that has become South Australia’s
largest home builder. As well as his business successes, Alan
has been a benefactor to the state, donating the statue of Queen
Adelaide that graces the Adelaide Town Hall, and contributing
to the Hickinbotham Roseworthy Wine Science Laboratory at the
University of Adelaide, among other projects.
