Those Dry-stone Walls

Stories from South Australia's Stone Age

Bruce Munday, Kristin Munday

Those Dry-stone Walls
Beautiful stone was nature's gift to South Australia, and an irresistible building material for early settlers. Many stone walls, without mortar or with no more than mud as glue, have defied gravity and the elements all these years. Or did gravity combine with deft balance to sustain them?

Join Bruce and Kristin Munday as they traverse South Australia in search of these walls, finding historic masterpieces and insights into rural life in the years following settlement. Those Dry-stone Walls is rich with beautiful imagery of these walls, the stories behind them, and advice to inspire you to follow in the footsteps of our early settlers and start building your own.

Praise for Those Dry-Stone Walls:
'Rich with beautiful imagery of these walls and the stories behind them. It also includes some inspiring advice to follow in the footsteps of early settlers if planning to start building your own. The characters who built these walls and the enterprises they supported come to life in this remarkable and interesting account of the Mundays' journey, as do the present day custodians who shared their stories with them. It also features South Australia's remarkable 'natural walls', the quarries from which the stone was won, and wallers past and present who have demonstrated their craft. A truly remarkable story.' - Nic Klaassen, Flinders Ranges Research

'Anyone interested in South Australia’s rural heritage will find much to enjoy in this book.' - Stephen Davenport, Indaily

Bruce Munday grew up in Geelong with a burning ambition to play football for his beloved Cats.

When that was not going to happen, he completed a PhD in physics and then spent four years researching the magnetoelastic properties of antiferromagnetic materials. Alas, he found that his penchant for the esoteric cut him off from many of his friends. So he moved into teaching where he had a captive audience.

In 1974 he and Kristin Munday bought a farm in the Adelaide Hills. There they raised sheep, cattle and three children, and planted many trees. When the kids left home Bruce established his own business as a communications consultant in natural resource management and discovered how much he enjoyed sharing stories with people living on the land - particularly those who love the land and want to conserve it.

Kristin Munday grew up in Melbourne lacking any ambition to play football but with an abiding passion for photography.
