Game in Transit

A history of the rhino in South Australia

Geoff Brooks

Game in Transit
GAME IN TRANSIT. These words are stamped on all Zoos SA rhino crates during transport, a sign that precious cargo is on board.

This book, by longtime rhino admirer and carer Geoff Brooks, is the story of the rhinos brought to South Australia since the first, Mr Rhini, in 1886.

The curious-looking animals brought to Monarto Zoo today are some of the remaining few of a species that has weathered ecological turmoil over many millions of years but is now facing extinction due to poaching. They are no longer anonymous specimens kept merely for display but valuable individuals, vital to the survival of their species. All have travelled to Australia from another country and, to keep their bloodline fresh and strong, many will eventually go elsewhere.

It is no longer possible to keep rhinos in isolation. They have become a species seemingly always in transit.

Geoff Brooks is one of Monarto Zoo’s longest serving employees and has been involved in the zoo’s rhino program since the arrival of the first rhino in 2000.
