An Introduction to Pontormo

A great but neglected painter and draftsman of the first part of the 16th century

Jonah Jones

An Introduction to Pontormo
The author's aim is to re-evaluate and recognise the contribution of Jacopo Pontormo within the history of art and, more specifically, the Italian Renaissance. While the first sections of this book provide the context of his life and career as the pre-eminent painter in mid-sixteenth-century Florence, later chapters trace Pontormo's stylistic development from High Renaissance classicism through to his anti-classical explorations. An introduction to Pontormo also provides a series of brief biographies of Pontormo's 20 key paintings which support this development.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Jonah Jones has operated an arts project management company for over three decades. He has developed and managed cultural organisations and foundations, toured art exhibitions to North America, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Asia and New Zealand, and advised on the development of cultural facilities including art museums and galleries, theatres and concert venues. He was awarded the Merito di Benemerenza from the Italian government for services to the Italian community in Australia. His interest in Jacopo Pontormo, and Renaissance art more generally, began many years ago with his first visit to Florence.
