Red Sand Green Heart

Ecological adventures in the outback

John L. Read

Red Sand Green Heart
Australia's arid outback is teeming with life ... when you know where to look.

From taipan snakes and pelicans to hippie activists and hardline miners, John Read brings to life the characters, creatures and cultures of the outback. Through vivid, personal stories he shares his experience as an ecologist making new discoveries; challenging conventional approaches to pastoralism, mining, tourism and environmental management; and witnessing the precarious balance of nature as species are pitted against the harsh climate of the outback.

Written in an accessible and non-scientific style, Red Sand Green Heart: Ecological adventures in the outback evokes a humorous, entertaining and informative picture of Australia's desert region and the environmental issues that affect us all.

John L. Read is an ecologist and author, passionate about informed and pragmatic approaches to environmental and animal welfare issues. His ecological research has featured in over 120 scientific articles and he sits on a range of scientific advisory groups. He has also published three acclaimed books on topics as diverse as desert ecology, saving an indigenously owned tropical rainforest and cross-cultural attitudes to war. John lives on South Australia's largest privately managed nature reserve with his wife, children and endangered malleefowl and marsupials.

Praise for Red Sand Green Heart 'Red Sand is an insight into a part of the nation that most know nothing about. It is a story of discovery, of personal and scientific space, adventure and awe. It is not literature but it is an exciting read that made me feel like decamping to the outback ... More than anything, though, Read and his friends have achieved a goal that most environmentalists can only dream of - they did something. They built a fence around a piece of central Australia and made it safe for creatures that are doomed without help.' - James Woodford, Sydney Morning Herald

'Read can obviously spin a good yarn around the campfire. His book is a mixture of rollicking anecdote and ecological explanation, combing tales of his adventures ... with discussions of the delicate arid-zone environment of the desert around Lake Eyre.' - Lorien Kaye, Age
