This book presents ideas, theories and practices of media education in Australia and the UK in the first decade of the 21st century. Contributors explore many of the key themes and debates that currently engage both English and media teachers across the English speaking world, including: Teaching critical perspectives on the media; Developing pedagogical approaches that incorporate student production using the 'new media; Examining time allocation pressures in designing media education programs; Creating manageable methods of evaluation and assessment; Exploring future demands in relation to audiences, texts and media institutions.

Andrew Burn is Reader in Education and New Media in the Faculty of Culture, and Pedagogy and the London Knowledge Lab at the Institute of Education, University of London, and Associate Director of the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media. He has published work on many aspects of the media, including the use of horror films in schools, young people’s production work with digital video, the use of computer games in Media education and English, and the multimodal nature of media texts.

Cal Durrant is Chair of Initial Teacher Education and lectures in English Curriculum and Media Education at Murdoch University. He was a member of the national research team that reported to DEETYA on the ways technology and literacy were being perceived and employed in Australian schools and has been involved in a number of projects that have applied IT to various aspects of teaching and learning. Cal is on the Executive Council of the Australian Association for the Teaching of English and also serves on the Editorial Board of English in Australia.
