With a lush, evocative text from Melinda Rackham, this book delves into the fascinating world of Truman’s art.<\/p>\n

One of her earliest series, the\u00a0Fish Carvings<\/em>, has echoes throughout her career.<\/p>\n

Truman’s\u00a0first solo exhibition, Fish Carvings<\/em> (1987), held\u00a0at the Contemporary Jewellery Gallery in Sydney, intuitively\u00a0articulates a feminist discourse of difference in conceptions\u00a0of ageing and beauty. Carved in two woods \u2013 youthful\u00a0pink fleshy Australian silky oak and wide-grained greying\u00a0mangrove, embedded with steel and lead \u2013 her Fish<\/em> sit\u00a0with the body, present in their own right, rather than being\u00a0absorbed into the portable gallery of the wearer\u2019s body.<\/p>\n

Acting as a counterpoint to the carvings, a grid of handcoloured\u00a0black and white images of women (and some men)\u00a0of all ages wear the pieces. As Truman is fond of mentioning,\u00a0given the right nutrients fish do not appear to get older,\u00a0rather they will continue growing to fill the space that\u00a0contains them. Instead of deteriorating with lived experience,\u00a0her ageing subjects radiate the beauty and individuality of\u00a0a rich interior life. The National Gallery of Australia quickly\u00a0acquired a neckpiece from this series.<\/p>\n
