‘The Subway System’ is a poem from Bel Schenk’s groundbreaking verse novel\u00a0<\/em>Every Time You Close Your Eyes<\/a>,\u00a0which is set across two blackouts in New York. The first is the famous blackout of 1977, when this excerpt is set, and which was remembered for widespread looting and arson. The second blackout, in 2003, forms a counterpoint \u2013 but you’ll have to read the book to find out more!<\/em><\/p>\n

The Subway System<\/strong><\/p>\n

People on the platform recall the location
\nof the exit light\u2019s glow and follow the sound
\nand energy made by the movements of others.
\nIf you\u2019re a reliable sort you give directions
\nto anyone who will follow and anyone who will trust.
\nThe rats are hushed.
\nThere seems no need to scurry under the railings.
\nThe A train is somewhere under the city.<\/p>\n

There, deep beneath earth and concrete,
\nunder grass and overhead footsteps,
\npeople are stuck inside the carriage.
\nThey hold things, feel their dirty way.
\nShit, yes, it\u2019s dark. No sir, you can\u2019t see. You can\u2019t see.
\nInside the people, blood rises and falls,
\nbreathing grows faster. Shallow.
\nDeep inside is exactly what you are thinking right now.<\/p>\n
