Plutarch\u00a0wrote of a well-known heavy drinker who would eat five or six bitter almonds and\u00a0avoid drunkenness. This was attributed to the bitterness of the almonds that \u2018dries\u00a0the inside of the body and keeps the veins from being overcharged\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">An ancient Chinese medical text, <em>Materia Dietetica<\/em>, lists many uses for\u00a0almonds including bringing down Qi, relieving coughing, reducing acute pain in\u00a0the heart and lungs and removing intestinal\u00a0blockages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">More recent studies carried out by medical practitioners from <a href=\"https:\/\/gshs.org\/muscle-care-roll-on-relief-review\/\">GSHS.org<\/a>\u00a0reveal that almonds\u00a0help to reduce the risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease,\u00a0heart disease and diabetes and to reduce\u00a0cholesterol, facilitate weight loss and inhibit\u00a0cancer cell growth \u2013 little wonder that they\u00a0are promoted as a \u2018superfood\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Almonds contain protein, carbohydrate\u00a0and concentrations of calcium, phosphorus\u00a0and magnesium, as well as vitamins from\u00a0groups B and E. They also have a high content\u00a0of fat (both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated)\u00a0and the highest fibre content of\u00a0any nut or seed. In the last decade the connection\u00a0between almonds and health has\u00a0been an important aspect of the promotion\u00a0of almonds and has been linked\u00a0to a dramatic increase in consumption,\u00a0and plantings, of almonds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Almonds are included in many\u00a0specialised diets. They are a source\u00a0of protein for vegetarians and vegans;\u00a0almond meal and almond flour can\u00a0replace wheat flour in gluten-free diets\u00a0for coeliacs and people who wish to avoid gluten; and almond milk is a common\u00a0substitute for cow\u2019s milk for people who are lactose intolerant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Almonds have a low glycaemic index (GI) and are often recommended for\u00a0people with type 2 diabetes, or who want to control their weight. Studies have\u00a0shown that snacking on raw almonds can help control blood sugar levels and\u00a0moderate appetite. This may be because of their crunchiness and the need to\u00a0chew them well but also because almonds are a rich source of magnesium, which\u00a0is important for carbohydrate metabolism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The so-called Paleolithic diet popularised the idea of \u2018activated\u2019 almonds \u2013\u00a0almonds soaked in water for at least 12 hours and then dehydrated. Proponents\u00a0say this process removes phytates and allows nutrients to be absorbed. Others\u00a0maintain there is no basis for this claim and that phytates have anti-cancer and\u00a0anti-oxidant properties that are lost in the process. Debate and research continues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite their health benefits, some people are allergic to almonds. There has\u00a0been an unexplained growth in the number of allergic reactions to different foods\u00a0in the last 20 years. Allergic reactions to tree nuts (a group that includes almonds)\u00a0are not as common as reactions to peanuts. However, care should be exercised\u00a0when introducing almonds to young children and they should be avoided by\u00a0people who have experienced severe reactions to peanuts and other tree nuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Smoked trout, almond and potato salad<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Trout and almonds are a classic combination made famous through the French\u00a0dish Trout Amandine: pan-fried trout garnished with flaked almonds browned in\u00a0butter. This salad is a delicious combination for lunch when the weather warms up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Serves 4\u20136<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">8 waxy potatoes (such as Bintje or Nicola), cut into chunks<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">1 smoked trout, skin and bones removed and flaked into pieces<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">1\/2 bunch flat leaf parsley, finely chopped<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">2 spring onions, finely chopped<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">1 clove garlic, crushed<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">1 tbsp capers<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Zest and juice of 1 lemon<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">2 tbsp olive oil<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Salt and pepper<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">3 radishes, finely sliced<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">80 g chopped almonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Place chopped potatoes in saucepan of boiling water and simmer until just\u00a0cooked.
