Responding to the prompt &#8216;come Monday&#8217;, Sarai&#8217;s poem &#8216;I&#8217;ll dream of this&#8217; ruminates on the quiet mundanity and joy of days away from work.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read her winning piece below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I&#8217;ll dream of this<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I reach blindly for the noise, silence it twice.<br>My shoulders pop and groan as if\u00a0<br>the sleep I shuck was minutes, not hours;<br>my toes tap tap tap the dog until\u00a0<br>we both groan in harmony,\u00a0<br>before subsiding to be enfolded warm again.\u00a0<br>          come Monday<br>          no slow starts\u00a0<br>The whites drizzle down the bowl\u2019s side,\u00a0<br>ineptly cracked and angled poorly, it\u00a0<br>left bubbled patches on the bench.\u00a0<br>Buttered toast humidity clogs the air,\u00a0<br>until time for a second coffee causes\u00a0<br>plates to be licked clean by lathing tongues.\u00a0<br>          come Monday\u00a0<br>          damp cereal in the sink\u00a0<br>A cold hand rolled around mine.\u00a0<br>Fairy tale apples, crackling bread, fresh almond milk,\u00a0<br>grass still damp underfoot, squelches, as\u00a0<br>musos sing moody mornings over dew,\u00a0<br>hot salted chocolate drizzles across my fingers\u00a0<br>you draw them in, clean them, I blush.\u00a0<br>          come Monday\u00a0<br>          you\u2019ll annoy me again\u00a0<br>Sand shifts listlessly under footsteps,\u00a0<br>barks bounds\u00a0braying happiness fills it all\u00a0<br>while insulted seagulls shove to move not at all.\u00a0<br>My hair wraps in seaweed strands around my face,\u00a0<br>as salt across my teeth feels like children at play;\u00a0<br>we leave our phones in the car.\u00a0<br>          come Monday\u00a0<br>          beaches only on monitors\u00a0<br>Dishes are stacked, the wok wobbling,\u00a0<br>smacking lips sound over YouTube views;\u00a0<br>&#8216;travel to exotic places,&#8217; they cry,\u00a0<br>just down the road from us here,\u00a0<br>crisp chardonnay in dusty glasses;\u00a0<br>you laugh so I laugh so the dog farts.\u00a0<br>          come Monday\u00a0<br>          microwaved meals\u00a0<br>Erotic flourish of floss is made with fingertips,\u00a0<br>gyrations of leering toothbrushes in the mirror,\u00a0<br>out goes the dog with the bin to howl,\u00a0<br>you wink suggestively, yawn, and smile a half,\u00a0<br>our ebooks left abandoned to the side,\u00a0<br>we reach through darkness, well-worn paths.\u00a0<br>          come Monday\u00a0<br>          I\u2019ll dream of this\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Sarai Mannolini-Winwood<\/strong> (she\/her) is an avid creative writer as well as a literary theorist and academic living in Kwoorabup\/Denmark, WA. She is intrigued by how we make sense of ourselves through our writing.
