Alexander Sadlo

Alexander Sádlo was the pioneer of optical geometrical painting in Australia, and his presence in Adelaide and at the Contemporary Art Society had an osmotic effect on a later generation of painters who are now credited with bringing Hard Edge, Colour Field and Op Art to the fore in Australia.

Sádlo works in several media - ranging from painting in oils to enamels, jewellery to ceramics - and a particular interest is creating three-dimensional illusions with abstract and semi-abstract forms. In the 1960s he was also one of the first artists in Australia to produce collages that commented on and documented the period. This work coincided with a heightening of the palette in his paintings, which absorbed some of the stylistic inclinations of contemporary fashions, hip designs and Pop Art.

Adam Dutkiewicz is the art critic for The Independent Weekly. He was awarded a doctorate by the University of South Australia in 2001 and has worked as an art critic for the Advertiser, Business Review Weekly and Art Monthly Australia online. He was a contributing author for the monograph Franz Kempf: Thinking on paper and author of the monographs titled Mervyn Smith: Watercolours and, on his father, A Matter of Mind: An introduction to the art of Wladyslaw Dutkiewicz (1918-1999).

Gaynor Sádlo is Head of Occupational Therapy at the University of Brighton in Sussex, England and a sculptor. She held her first exhibition of stone and ceramic sculpture in Adelaide in 1971 and completed her PhD in problem-based learning at the University of Queensland in 1997.
