Wotan's Daughter

The life of Marjorie Lawrence

Richard Davis

Wotan's Daughter
Wotan's Daughter recounts the turbulent life and career of Marjorie Lawrence, one of Australia's most renowned opera stars. From humble beginnings in rural Victoria, Lawrence rose to become one of the pre-eminent Wagner singers of her generation, acclaimed and honoured in Europe and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York where she shared roles with the legendary Kirsten Flagstad.

Stricken by polio at the height of her career, Lawrence fought back courageously against physical disability and prejudice to rebuild her shattered life and return to the stage. This is a book for all music lovers and those who value an inspiring story of triumph over adversity.

Praise for Wotan's Daughter
'An excellently written and refreshingly objective biography that flows like a novel ...' - Bill Russell, WFOS-FM

'Australia's Wakefield Press introduced Wotan's Daughter: The Life of Marjorie Lawrence to the world in November 2012. Featuring 32 pages of seldom-seen photographs, this literary work has been extensively researched, expertly written, and elegantly printed. It is most befitting for a legendary Wagnerian soprano whose life's story still strikes a universal chord.' - Barbara Sloan, Hot Springs Arkansas (USA) newspaper

'[An] authoritative and very readable biography ... As is usual with Wakefield's publications, Wotan's Daughter is a beautiful book. It has high quality paper, cover boards with gold leaf, a stunning dust jacket and generous black-and-white gloss photographs as well.' - Lisa Hill, ANZLitLovers LitBlog

'This excellent book comes with an extensive discography and a thorough index.' - Peter Pinne, Stage Whispers

'Gripping. A good "read" as Marjorie Lawrence's story is so compelling. Recommended.' - Charles Mintzer, Opera Nostalgia
