NEW RELEASES: YA Road Trips and Irreverent Short Stories

New YA and Literary Fiction

At Wakefield Press, we love the feeling of having new books arrive in the warehouse after months (sometimes years) of hard work by our dedicated book team. We’re almost as excited as our fantastic authors!

Two of our most recent new releases have some particularly excited (and clever) authors. Allayne Webster and Andrew Roff have each created wonderful videos in honour of their new books.

Watch them below, and get to know our authors and their books a little better.

New YA release: That Thing I DidThat Thing I Did, Allayne L. Webster

Five misfits hit the road in a haunted hearse, on a madcap road-trip from their prison-bordering suburb behind the ‘Mullet-Proof Fence’ to small-town Mount Gambier.

After Taylor Kennedy makes a fatal Facebook error, he suddenly finds himself on the road with his eccentric neighbour, a mad grandma, a prison escapee, a beautiful hitchhiker, and who knows how many ghosts.

Frank, fearless and taboo-breaking, That Thing I Did is a rollicking road trip with a serious side.

‘A wild ride from start to finish: it’s witty, hilarious, hectic, manic and unabashedly irreverent!’
– Holden Sheppard

To celebrate the release of her new YA road trip adventure, Allayne teamed up with the wonderful Adam Cece to film a launch video for That Thing I Did. It’s a hilarious chat, with plenty of wink-wink, nudge-nudge going on – a perfect fit for the book!

Adam calls That Thing I Did ‘bawdy, bonkers, brilliant’. Watch the launch video here for a taste of what to expect.

The Teeth of a Slow Machine, Andrew RoffNew Fiction release: The Teeth of a Slow Machine

This daring, irreverent short-story collection dissects and explores the conundrums of contemporary life and what it is to be human, through a world very like our own.

A corporate satire follows a pair of dark operatives working for a chicken franchise as they take careful revenge on counterfeiters. A coder calculates the odds of her husband’s cold developing complications and killing him, in a story told in code. And an archeologist working for mining companies against the interests of Indigenous communities develops a mysterious psychological condition that causes her to black out and commit extreme acts of generosity.

‘At turns dreamlike, luminously satirical, fever-pitched and achingly mortal, the scope of Andrew Roff’s debut collection is utterly refreshing and a joy to linger in.’
– Josephine Rowe

Andrew’s video trailer for The Teeth of a Slow Machine matches the strangeness of his debut short-story collection. Watch Andrew grapple with madness in his book trailer here.

Congratulations to Allayne and Andrew on their new books!

  1. I am so excited about these books. I love short stories and YA. Love the videos. The empty auditorium and avocado released. How exciting for Wakefield Press to be working with such talented and creative authors. Everyone needs to read these new releases.
