What a surprisingly unique and charming book!
I was a bit delighted flipping through this one in our Wakefield shop. I've seen the cover a thousand times but had not yet found the time to peek inside. I finally had a look today, and I had a lot of fun flipping through Dogs in Australian Art by Steven Miller.

Alright, first off, I should probably get this out of the way.
The truth is, I am not a dog person.
Don't get me wrong, I do like dogs (particularly the silly looking ones!) but I am much more likely to cross a street to stroke a cat than to pet a dog. Which is probably why I passed this book a million times until I opened it.
Now though, I wish I'd given this book a chance earlier, because look! This book includes the most gorgeous artworks of my absolute favourite kind of dog! Silly ones!

Haha, the above painting might actually be the best thing I have ever seen, and is definitely my personal favourite.
However, if you are the type of dog (or art!) lover who prefers your animals (and art!) to be majestic and sophisticated, then this book definitely caters for you as well 🙂
Here are a few of my other favourites from within the pages of Dogs in Australian Art, a beautiful, charming and gorgeous book (even for people who prefer cats!).

I hope you enjoyed these paintings as much as I did!

Dogs in Australian Art looks at Australian art through the lens of dog painting, showcasing over 150 masterworks that illustrate the deep bond between Australians and their best friends.

Steven Miller's whimsical text argues that all the major shifts which occurred in Australian art, and which have traditionally been attributed to the environment or historical factors, really occurred because of dogs. His book is also a study of how the various dog breeds have been depicted from colonial times until the present. It features over 80 dog breeds.
This fully revised and expanded edition of Steven Miller's beautiful bestselling doggie book features many new paintings. A rich journey through Australia's art history via the lens of man's best friend.
