Smokescreens and Searchlights

Smokescreens and Searchlights

Bill Guy

The title of Bill Guy's first novel is a double metaphor; smokescreens for the attempts to cover up, and searchlights for the efforts to expose.

A mining company exploiting a gold deposit in Central Australia cuts corners on its environmental protection procedures, and, as a result, a poisonous seepage contaminates a nearby water hole. Two boys are poisoned by swimming in the water hole, and one of them dies. A young newspaper editor fastens on the incident and sets out to expose the corporate-political corruption and the cover-up. The newspaper and the Outback become virtual characters in the drama, one reaching out from its metropolitan base to uncover corporate bastardry in the remote interior.
