The First Police Union

The First Police Union

The Police Association of South Australia - 100 years

Nigel Hunt

The Police Association of South Australia is the nation's oldest police union. It is also one of the most respected. From tentative beginnings in 1911 it has grown into an organisation that boasts almost 100 per cent membership and has won the respect of fellow unions, governments and the community. Over a century of trials and victories, PASA has prevailed because of the strength and resolve of its leadership.

The union has been led by a succession of strong characters who fought for the interests of members. Among their legacies are the introduction of Police Health in 1935 and the excellent levels of pay and a generous pension scheme enjoyed by those who have worked tirelessly to protect South Australians. While the success of any union will always be publicly judged by such measures, its members know the importance of PASA is far greater. Ensuring their welfare in times of grief, providing assistance in times of conflict and guidance in times of turmoil are lesser-known aspects of PASA's services to members of the police family.

The First Police Union charts not just the evolution of PASA from its formative meetings in 1911 through to the latest landmark enterprise agreement struck in the year of its centenary, but its transformation into one of Australia's most effective trade unions.
