The Northern Territory

A litany of failure

Murray McLaughlin

There is no modern history of the Northern Territory. The Northern Territory: A litany of failure presents a new and composite coverage of the Territory's political history from early settlement, with an emphasis on the impact in recent decades of Territory government policies on Aboriginal people, more than 30 per cent of the population.

Today, all quality-of-life indices - housing, health and education, for example - demonstrate that the lives of Aboriginal people in the Territory remain blighted by government indifference. At the same time, government spending favours a non-Aboriginal population which has been largely static for many years, as climate change worsens in the far-north, and as law-and-order shows signs of collapse (the Aboriginal population, especially its youth, is largely blamed for the latter). This book includes substantial material disclosed for the first time.
