On a Shoestring

Recipes from the House of the Raising Sons

Samela Harris

Journalist Samela Harris is a working mum with a healthy sense of the ridiculous. While raising her two sons, she attracted droves of hungry lads to generous spreads cooked on her shoestring budget. Along the way she learnt how to create a dinner party from two-minute noodles, how to trick the boys into eating and enjoying prunes, and how to make a meal from scraps while accidentally locked in the kitchen.

In On a Shoestring Samela serves up over 100 simple and tasty recipes while she entertains us with stories from her House of the Raising Sons. Brenda Maxwell's wicked illustrations make a delicious accompaniment.

Samela Harris was born in Adelaide. She worked as a journalist in London and Edinburgh, pausing to marry, bear two sons and spend five years as an organic market gardener in lush Surrey, England. It was there that her interest in hearty home cookery developed. Returning to Australia as a supporting mother, Samela made bountiful shoestring budget meals the core of a secure environment for her sons. She worked at the Adelaide Advertiser as a features writer, critic and Internet writer. Samela is the daughter of Australian poet and social commentator, the late Max Harris.
